Technology

BBC Bircher Smart Access puts its faith in tried-and tested technologies to enable it to meet your high safety and reliability requirements. Its technology expertise covers pressure-sensitive as well as contact-free detector systems. In the field of contactless detectors, BBC Bircher Smart Access makes use not only of microwave technology, but also of active and passive infrared technology. Pressure-sensitive safety edges protect and monitor closing edges on doors and gates, while contact mats work as electric surface switches to safely activate and deactivate doors and machines. The pulse is passed on to the control system via the switching device by means of wireless signal transmission. At BBC Bircher Smart Access, the focus is always on protecting people and machinery. You will find further information about safety standards and certifications on the corresponding product page.

Microwave technology – protection and activation for automatic doors and gates

Microwaves are electromagnetic waves with an unusually high frequency. The microwave motion detector, which works according to the Doppler principle in the 24 GHz microwave range, detects moving objects, irrespective of their temperature.
People or moving objects (min. 10 cm/s) throw the frequency being emitted and received out of balance. This difference in frequencies is evaluated and transmitted as a switching pulse via relays or electronic contacts. As a result, almost all moving objects can be detected.

The following motion detectors are based on microwave technology:

Infrared detector for activating and protecting doors and gates

The presence detector is able to emit infrared beams itself and to evaluate any shift in the frequency range. To this end, the detector runs via background analysis, i.e. the detector corresponds with the background and uses it as a reflector. It therefore detects all the people and objects moving within its detection area and the switching operation is triggered on the door being monitored.

The following motion detectors are based on microwave technology:

Passive infrared

Passive infrared motion detectors measure and compare infrared beams in their detection zones. They function passively and do not emit any infrared beams themselves. As soon as an object enters the detection zone of a PIR motion detector, the object’s thermal radiation is routed via lenses to detector elements and a switching operation is triggered. The object’s temperature must always differ from that of its environment by more than 2 °C and it must be moving at a minimum speed of 10 cm/s. The greater the temperature difference between the moving object and its environment, the higher the response sensitivity of a passive infrared detector.

The following products are based on activ passive technology:

Tactile protection with safety edges and safety contact mats

Safety edges and contact mats from BBC Bircher Smart Access form tried-and-tested safety systems for protecting people, vehicles and other objects.
Safety edges can be mounted on the primary and secondary closing edges of gates and doors to provide reliable protection. Contact mats are primarily used to protect danger zones on machines and in the healthcare sector.

Tactile surface protection with contact mats

Pressure-sensitive contact mats from BBC Bircher Smart Access are used for protection or activation in door areas and to ensure machine and plant safety.
When anyone steps on the surface of the mat, or a load is placed on it, two parallel copper contact surfaces are pressed together, which triggers the pulse for switching doors, gates or vehicles. The switching element is reliably protected from dirt and moisture by an outer sleeve made of robust polyurethane.
If used as a safety contact mat, the signal is evaluated by a safety switching device, which controls the activation and deactivation of machinery and plant.
BBC Bircher Smart Access has the following contact mats in its range:

Tactile edge protection thanks to electrical safety edges

Electrical safety edges are used for protecting pinching, crushing and shearing points on automatic gates, doors, machinery, plant and public transport.
The robust EPDM edges can be mounted horizontally or vertically on doors, gates or other moving parts of the plant. When a load is placed on it, the contact strip drawn into the profile is pressed together and the signal is transmitted to a switching device, which trips the opening or closing mechanism.
BBC Bircher Smart Access has the following safety edges in its range:

Loop detectors for industrial gates, barriers, car parks and bollards

Loop detectors are used to activate barriers, open gates, control traffic and monitor car parks for stationary or slow-moving vehicles.
They detect all metallic vehicles, from bicycles to HGVs with trailers. As soon as a vehicle drives over the induction loop laid in the ground, the loop’s resonance frequency changes. The detector reliably evaluates every change in frequency immediately and issues the pulse to open the gate or activate the parking system.

BBC Bircher Smart Access makes the following loop detectors:

Pressure wave technology

Pressure wave switches are principally used on larger gates and on access systems for various vehicles in public transport.
When a pressure wave profile is compressed, the air volume it contains is displaced in a pulsed manner and this generates a pressure wave. This wave passes through the connecting hose into the PW switch directly, where it triggers a switching operation.

Electric contact is maintained for as long as the input pressure is above the response pressure. Just a slight pressure of 3 to 4 mbar is all that is needed to effect switching.

The following products are based on pressure wave technology :

Electrical signal transmission – radio, inductive and wired

During signal evaluation on automatic gates, information regarding the status of safety edges is transmitted to the switching device securely and contact-free, via either radio or induction. This switching device monitors the safety edges that emit signals for actuation and interrupts.

INTRA 50 and InTra6 inductive signal transmission

This technology is used on automatic sliding gates. The status of the pressure-sensitive safety edges on the moving part of the gate is induced reliably and contact-free in a steel cable by means of a converter and transmitted to the switching device via a fixed coil.
The stationary safety edges can be connected directly to the switching device. This simultaneously solves the problem of wear that is encountered with conventional cable solutions.
With InTra6, up to four safety edge circuits can be reliably monitored with just one system.

The following products are based on inductive signal transmission:

Radio signal transmission

The radio signal transmission system is primarily used in the field of automatic gates.
The status of safety edges, which are fixed to the mobile part of the gate, is transmitted contact-free via a secure, bidirectional radio link to the switching device, where the opening or closing pulse is triggered immediately.
Depending on your application and needs, you can select either the one-channel or one of the two-channel variants.

The following products are based on radio technology:

Wired evaluation

Switching devices monitor the contact mats and safety edges for actuation and interrupts. These connected sensors with a terminating resistor of 8.2 kOhm are monitored for a change in the quiescent current. If the sensor is actuated, the total resistance drops, which causes a defined switching threshold to be undershot. The status LED lights up and the switching operation is triggered immediately.

The following products are based on wired signal transmission:
